From Pamela Marcantel, the author of AN ARMY OF ANGELS A NOVEL OF JOAN OF ARC (St. Martin's Press, 1997) comes an exciting new novel set during World War II. A thinking person's vampire tale.
Neither a horror tale nor a teenage romance, V-SQUAD is a one-of-a-kind reinvention of the vampire mythos as well as a deliberate homage to the 1940s Noir and classic adventure genres.
In August, 1943, millionaire vampire John English convinces President Roosevelt that Nazi-aligned vampires intend to assassinate Winston Churchill and key Allied generals before they can complete plans for the D-Day invasion of France. In exchange for safe passage across the Atlantic, English volunteers to raise a squad of his fellow vampires to intercept the enemy and destroy them.
What Roosevelt does not know is that the leader of the Nazi vampires is the ancient and demonic Longchamps, John English’s longtime nemesis. Moreover, although patriotism is part of the American vampire’s agenda, his driving motivation is a centuries-long hunger for revenge.
Roosevelt responds to English’s request by providing a young OSS operative, Edwina Kelly, to act as liaison between them. At first resistant to working with the undead because of her family’s troubled history with them, Edwina yields to the mysterious John English’s charisma after he saves her from a pre-dawn attack at the hands of an enemy assassin. In time he reluctantly discloses to Edwina his connection to Longchamps and his real reason for aiding the Allies, a chilling revelation that ties the distant past and present together in a knot of bigotry and mass murder.
Eager to assist English on his quest are the cowboy, Phil Montana; English’s brother, George, a former monk; and bon vivant Nathan Skidmore. To give his group an edge by keeping them informed of the enemy’s movements, English also recruits clairvoyant vampire Henry Bevert. But the most immediately crucial member of their enterprise is ninja master Hiroshi Yoshimata, who teaches the V-Squad to put aside their vampire style of fighting in order to work as a team using stealth and ninja weapons. None of them realizes initially that the intruder who crashes their first meeting, teenage vampire Eddie Marsh, possesses a singular genius for battle that will provide the lynchpin for their success.
When Edwina is kidnapped at Southampton and her fate becomes uncertain, the V-Squad find that to save her as well as Churchill and the Allied generals, they must make surprising choices even at the risk of their immortality. This willingness to sacrifice a future of endless night for the sake of human freedom and long-delayed justice will determine the fate of the world.

Pam Marcantel's latest novel is an unusual piece of historical fiction that is an action-packed page turner but also deals with the age-old themes of good vs. evil, loyalty, sacrifice, immortality, and the nature of the soul. All but one of the main characters are vampires. Yes, vampires. No, not brooding, angst-ridden teen vampires who are struggling with relationship issues. The members of Marcantel's V-Squad are centuries old and fighting to save the world from Nazi domination. V-Squad is a vampire novel with a clever premise, sure to appeal to history buffs and baby boomers.Marcantel carefully shapes the heroes of her novel, creating complex beings with whom the readers empathize and for whom we cheer, but without allowing us to forget that they feed on human blood. The V-Squad is a team of vampires with a conscience who are assembled by their leader, John English, a wise "vamp" with genuine regard for humans and an axe to grind with the vampire who has been his nemesis for centuries, the truly evil Longchamps, who has aligned himself with the much-hated human embodiment of evil, Adolph Hitler. Although Hitler never makes an appearance in the novel, the readers' visceral emotional response to him and his diabolical reign of terror fuels our hatred of Longchamps as Marcantel weaves his story and finally allows us to meet our villain face to hideous, fanged face. The other members of the Squad bring their stories and unique skills to the mission and include, to name a few, Phil Montana, a cowboy who is armed with a rifle that shoots wooden stakes, Nathan Skidmore, a smooth-talking, Southern aristocratic, womanizing cad, and chameleon-like Eddie, the forever brash adolescent vampire, who was "turned" at the tender age of 16 and finds a father figure in John English.
Marcantel's heroine is the sometimes all-too-human, beautiful, and straight-laced Lieutenant Edwina Kelley, who has secrets of her own that make her well-suited as President Roosevelt's liaison to this motley band of commandos, who are specially trained for this life-or-death mission by Hiroshi, the much-revered ninja vampire.
Sprinkled with Marcantel's edgy wit and carried along on perfectly-detailed descriptions of scenes as varied as President Roosevelt's office, New York's Chinatown, the battle-ravaged Aylsdon Estate in Yorkshire, and gory vamp-on-vamp battle scenes, V-Squad confirms much of what fans of vampire tales have learned since Nosferatu, Dracula, and Barnabas Collins: Even "good" vampires sleep in coffins during the day, disintegrate into piles of nothingness when they are "staked" or decapitated, and must be invited to enter a human's abode. Marcantel adds to our understanding of vampire lore as well: A vampire does cast a shadow, can be photographed, and becomes nauseated by the smell of human food. This vampire fan is still contemplating a question that came to mind while I was reading V-Squad: What is the effect of violent, bloody, and involuntary immortality on one's personality? That is, was Longchamps a wicked human who mistreated his fellow man before he was "turned"? Is John English's brother, George, who had been a very pious man of the cloth in life, still heaven-bound after centuries of preying on humans for sustenance? I will continue to put my trust in the garlic I have in my kitchen to keep my house vampire-free as I eagerly await Marcantel's next book!

Mediocre, derivative pap. Not worth the time or the money.
V-Squad is a fun page-turner that takes the Vampire genre to a fresh new place with original and memorable characters that will leave you wanting more. Hopefully, there will be more to come from this author with John English and company. V-Squad
I absolutely would recommend V-Squad for any lover of the vampire genre, but especially for "traditionalists" like my husband, who prefer Anne Rice's vampires to Stephenie Meyer's. So often with vampire novels, we read how they stayed in the background, avoiding the sweeping events of human history, content to feed on us, but staying on the fringes. V-Squad beautifully takes that fringe concept, and pits good vs. evil set to the backdrop of World War II. If you knew your worst enemy were alive (kind of) and well, and manipulating the already bad guys, what would you do? V-Squad answers that question in a novel that reads like a film. These vampires may not sparkle, but V-Squad's undead, unsung heroes of World War II shine with their own light.
This amazing book by Pamela Marcantel deliciously puts the reader in the heart of a very unique story. John English is a centuries-old millionaire vampire alive (sort of) and well during World War II. English is also an American patriot. When he learns of a plot to assassinate William Churchill and members of the Allied High Command by Nazi-aligned vampires, he enlists the aid of an unusual group of his fellow vampires to help him prevent this tragedy from happening. Though they are a small band of self-appointed patriots, they each bring a unique talent and perspective into the situation. Among them are a psychic, a ninja and a cowboy. While on the surface this grouping of people may seem to the reader to be a bit of a stretch, Marcantel fleshes out these characters quite nicely, allowing the reader to understand their individual backgrounds and making the reader feel as if these characters are old friends. English arranges to meet with President Roosevelt and offers his services to the President in exchange for a safe passage to England, where he and his fellow vampires will fight the Nazi vampires, led by English's nemesis, the very, VERY evil Longchamps. Longchamps is by far the most evil of all vampires, the devil personified, who makes Adolph Hitler look like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Roosevelt sends the very beautiful but no-nonsense Lieutenant Edwina Kelly to accompany the vampires in their effort to win the war. To give away any more of the story would be to do the reader a great disservice.
V-Squad grabs the reader into the story from the very beginning as if Marcantel is saying, "Hang on to THIS roller-coaster - we're going for a ride!" And what a ride it is! Ms. Marcantel's style of writing is so descriptive, one can easily see the places and people, smell the smells, and experience all this very engaging story has to offer. Along the way, the reader will laugh and cry as the author so wonderfully connects the reader and the characters. The writing is so descriptive it is like watching a movie. This very hard-to-put-down book is a fast-read, with clever plot devices near the end that will leave the reader wanting more. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a long series of books with these characters. Even more, this book HAS to be made into a movie! To not do so would be an injustice!
Unlike the Twilight series, which is geared toward "tweens and teens", this book is definitely geared toward late teenagers, as well as young and older adults, due to its graphic descriptions of violence and a little bit of coarse language. However, Marcantel's style of writing is such that one finds oneself overlooking any images of violence, as they are part and parcel of the story. Even the violence is oddly quite engaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the vampire genre. Not only will the reader be taken on a great thrill-ride, they may even learn a bit of history along the way. Get the word out about this book - it's too good to miss! Hollywood - are you listening?
Even though this is a relatively short novel, the characters are strongly drawn and the combination of a recent historical setting and the active participation of the vampire community is a unique situation. I enjoyed this far more than the Anne Rice novels and far more than the rather insipid literary vampires that have captured the public imagination, lately. The pace of this novel is fast, making it the perfect summer read. Set in the latter part of WWII, I especially enjoyed the placement of world leaders in a very special plot twist. Someone needs to look at this for a movie option, as the fast pace and definitive characters are ready-made for the big screen.
