Mila (A Three-Part Story) takes place in 43 AD when Rome conquered Southern Britannia. Mila, a young mother, is taken hostage by Rome, ripped away from her son, and sold as a gladiator. After she uses fighting skills, learned from her father, to survive a battle in the arena, Mila’s master decides to make her a deal. If she fights for him and wins back his status as an entertainer, she’ll be granted her freedom, which will enable her to search for her son. Mila accepts, unaware that this new world has nothing to offer but tremendous peril, unspeakable grief, and unforgivable lies.

I was not sure what to expect actually, since the author is so young. But the book is very well written, if I did not know the author was so young I would never have guessed. Now on to the book, Mila is gut-wrenching as it should be. She was ripped from her home, her son torn from her arms. Every single action Mila takes is in hopes of reuniting with her son. She is forced to fight as a Gladiator, and the fights are as brutal as they surely were in real life. The author does a fine job describing what life must have been like to be a slave, to be forced to fight or die. Run or Die. Kill or Die. It is a gripping tragic tale. I look forward to Aliya McReynold's future works. She is going to be huge someday, to have this much talent this young, no way she will not grow ever stronger in her craft. Amazing job.

Mila A ThreePart Story edition by Aliya McReynolds Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

An amazing book!this book will capture any readers attention.its full of suspense.
Amazing story, keeps you entertained and guessing throughout the whole book. I definitely recommend. I can't wait for the next book she writes.
I've already read 125 pages and I'm totally taken in! Aliya McReynolds is a very talented writer. I can invision every written word.
I will leave more feedback once I finish the book; can't wait.
The story is well written, and keeps the reader engaged. There are a few historical inaccuracies, but they're not so large that they detract from the story.
Wow, words cannot describe how much I loved this story! I didn't want it to end! My mom had to pull me away from the book a few times just for me to do chores (and let me tell you, I would've rather been in the arena with Mila fighting alongside her).

Mila was very action packed and fast paced. I mean, woman gladiators...who knew, right? This story was very accurate and fun to read as far as history and action go. I think that the author did a very nice job. It was a good read and a story that I will be reading over and over until it becomes a movie (fingers crossed)!
I had a hard time putting this book down! I liked how quickly the plot moved. So many novels will tend drag things out, seemingly padding the story. This was raw, quickly moving through events, propelling the reader into the harsh world presented. The writing style is mature and the descriptions paint a vivid picture. The only thing I would have enjoyed more of, would be deeper character development. I found that I wanted to really get to know Mila, Ivan and Quintas more.
A great read!
The short review
Mila is a great plot-driven historical fiction that I enjoyed reading. It captured my interest from the onset and maintained throughout all three parts. I loved how Aliya McReynolds structured the plot into three distinct but cohesive sections. Sometimes the narrative is jerky or repetitive and the dialogue, lacking drive. The descriptive aspect of the story improved as it went on. Yes, it’s not a perfect novel, but it IS worth your time. I enjoyed this book and will be reading more from McReynolds in the future.

The long review
My overall thoughts on Mila are that the story is plot-driven and the characterization is in a direct manner. However, I did quite enjoy the characters and the world which Aliya McReynolds adapted. She is a gifted writer and I enjoyed how she structured the story. Having the book in three sections definitely enhanced the story and allowed the plot to be more forceful. With each section a new leaf is turned and a new aspect of the characters is revealed. Even more so, I think that the author improved in her ability to describe and reveal motivations as well as utilize plot devices.

The negative aspects There were times when the narrative and dialogue became repetitive and lacked fluidity. The thought processes of the characters could be blunt and too laid-out. I found that using direct characterization caused the story to read a little flatly at points. I would have preferred more inferences, implications and connotations throughout. There were some characters that I didn’t hate enough and some that I didn’t love enough as a result. Some aspects of the plot felt a little forced and sped-up. Much of the dialogue felt abrupt, not always purposeful. There are also a lot of paragraphs in the beginning of the story making it feel a little jagged, shifting too much.

The positive aspects Though I made a comment about the way the characters were described… I really enjoyed them. And found myself rooting for them. The plot was comprehensive, interesting, and intelligent. I enjoyed the world that Aliya McReynolds adapted and utilized for her own story. Everything felt very well researched, the scenes, cities, and manners created a vision for the reader. McReynolds maintained historical integrity and used aspects of history in a smart manner that captivated me as I read the story. I found that I loved the descriptions of the fight sequences. The actions were pronounced and I could picture the event. One device I really enjoyed was the flashbacks. They were useful and blended well into the scene. I found the structure of three parts quite useful, it was entertaining and also kept each character fresh. The plot remained driven and the world was refreshed each time. The book kept getting better and better as I read it.

SPOILERS One thing that I admired was McReynolds’ ability to kill off a character. She was unafraid to tear away someone important from the plot. I found that the events seemed inevitable, like every bad ending was necessary. This intrigued me because it reminded me of something my English Professor said “There is always something inevitable about tragedy. The hero has to fight against an unseen force.” Aliya McReynolds captures this in that her characters seem to die because they had to, it was necessary. I think there’s something special in being able to create that tension and release.
